Matematika jako samostatný obor je na Fakultě pedagogické Západočeské univerzity v Plzni vyučována již od samého založení fakulty v roce 1948, a to buď samostatnou katedrou nebo matematickým oddělením katedry, jež sdružovala několik příbuzných oborů.
V současné době oddělení nabízí přípravu budoucích učitelů v těchto programech:
- Matematika se zaměřením na vzdělávání - tříleté bakalářské studium nabízející uchazečům získání fundamentálních znalostí a vědomostí v oblastech vysokoškolské matematiky a pedagogicko-psychologického základu
- Učitelství matematiky pro 2. stupeň ZŠ - dvouletý navazující magisterský obor rozšiřující znalosti studentů zvláště v oblasti didaktiky, dějin matematiky a metod řešení matematických úloh
Mathematics has been taught as an idividual discipline at the Faculty of education of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen since the establishment of the faculty in 1948. It was taught either by an autonomous department or by a mathematical section of a department that merged several related disciplines.
Nowadays the department offers the training of future teachers of the following disciplines:
- Mathematics in Education - 3-year bachelor's degree that offers fundamental knowledge in higher mathematics and pedagogy-psychological basics
- Mathematics Teaching for Secondary Schools - 2-year master's degree that expands the students' knowledge particularly in didactics, history of mathematics and methods of mathematical problem solving
